Near Mission Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is an excellent small-town natural history museum, with plenty to interest the kids.  Look for the whale skeleton out front.

Mission Santa Barbara

December 2000

The Mission Santa Barbara is very well preserved.  The grounds are beautiful and the structure, though small retains much of it history.  The mission church is still used for Roman Catholic Mass on Sunday, so mind your manners if you are there on a weekend.

Vasquez Rocks Natural Area

This is the place where those strange rocks stick up out of the ground.   Famous for scenes in The Wild, Wild West, Star Trek and the Flintstones movie, the geology is really striking.

There really are tar pits, though the mastodon in the photo is artificial.  And there’s tar seeping up from the ground around the place, too.  The museum is nice as well, including many specimens from the pit.
