150th Anniversary of the Carson City Mint 1870-2020, Carson City, NV.

This cocktail party, held at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion in honor of this historical anniversary of the Carson City Mint was a wonderful and informative social event.  In attendance was the Nevada State Governor, Steve Sisolak, and the Director of the U.S. Mint, David Ryder.  A short presentation was given by a Mark Twin interpreter.  Each guest was given a newly minted commemorative coin.

Highway 50 Flag Renewal

Lake Tahoe, NV

2023-09

Driving from Lake Tahoe to Carson City, you pass the flag high on a rocky crag.  Chris Sneed erected the flag on 9-11-2001 and renews it annually. Inspiational! Great patriotism!

Chocolate Nugget Candy Factory

611 US Highway 395 North

Washoe Valley, NV 89704

Located a few miles North of Carson City, this is not a charitable organization at all, but the statue was so interesting, we had to include it.  Get off the I-580 freeway at the old 395 exit halfway between Reno and Carson City, and go east a couple miles.

And we always need to stop for chocolate!

Reno, Nevada

UNR Keck Museum https://www.unr.edu/mackay/about/keck-museum is a geology-oriented museum on campus of UNR in Reno, NV.  The museum includes an impressive organization of rocks and minerals arranged according to geologic taxonomy.  Spectacular silver collection.  Really cool 1930s-era museum room! This is the source of “Mineral Monday”.  In early 2020, we held off of donations due to COVID.  But 2020 was a good time to fund renovations. Recent improvements included an addition of a temporary, topical exhibit room.

Wilbur D. May Center

Local boy makes good and donates his lifetime collection of treasures to his hometown.  Fun museum with artifacts and artwork from around the world, collected when such things were a true novelty.

Amtrak

Reno, NV

2023-03

Travel through the Sierra in heavy snowy conditions. Spectacular views.  The railroad passes through unsullied scenery.

The train (California Zephyr) from Chicago was four hours late into  Reno and about seven hours late by the  time we arrived in Roseville. On the plus side, everyone was in a good mood: passengers, staff, everyone.  Based on this experience, Amtrak is certainly not a reliable method of  transportation.  And with delays like this is not a reliable method  of entertainment, either. Rather disappointing, but glad the delays did not stretch into nighttime, causing me to miss the snow.

Fine to do it once.

Sparks, Nevada

Tesla Gigafactory, Sparks, NV

Of course, Tesla is not a non-profit, but taking a tour of this battery manufacturing plant is extremely educational and informative.  The tour includes a walking tour of the facility and a bus tour around the grounds.

Northern Nevada

Northeastern Nevada Museum

Elko, NV

2023-10

Stuffed animals from Jack Wanamaker were outstanding. Literally. No railings!  The temptation to touch might be too much for small children.

California Trail interpretive center

Elko, NV

2023-10

Very nice historical display.  Outstanding stories of emigrants!  Learn about the metaphor to “see the elephant” but be unable to decribe it. The actual trail is a little distance away.  It would be nice to link to the actual trail or point people to a segment to walk on.

Formerly known as Flyaway, this is an indoor skydiving facility.  A large fan blows air vertically to allow in-place skydiving.  Most customers are there for the fun (and lower cost than the airplane-version of skydiving, but it does demonstrate the physical concept of relative motion (the air is moving or you are, you can’t tell the difference)

Penn and Teller put on a delightful, humorous magic show.  Some tricks are explained, some are performed to show you how it is done.  And both simply reinforce the appreciation of these skilled magicians.  The magicians are very clear that all their magic is done by the tricks of the trade.  There have no paranormal abilities.

The free Lion Habitat at the MGM Grand hotel features a small pride of lions with a walk-through tunnel exhibit to get you as close as possible to the lions.  Their message of conservation is appreciated, though these “tamed” lions will never be able to live in the wild.
